- NATURE OF WORK:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Engineering, performs engineering and planning for the cooperatives’
electrical systems. Is involved in complex work on highly technical problems and participates in the formulation and
enforcement of cooperative policies, standards, and specifications. Exercises a high degree of decision-making that
involves interpretation and application of cooperative policy and RUS standards along with analysis of fact and
circumstance. Has regular contact with other cooperative staff, personnel with affiliated associations, consultants,
contractors, and customers requiring considerable tact and diplomacy. Occasionally engages in light to moderate
physical exertion and works in both an office and field environment. May be exposed to extreme climatic conditions.

- EXAMPLES OF WORK, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meets and reviews work with cooperative staff, developers, consultants, and other agencies in the preparation of plans and specifications for individual projects.
- Completes plans, cost estimates, and staking sheets for projects, developments, and additions to the cooperative’s electrical distribution system.
- Analyze project requirements to determine justification and feasibility for implementation.
- Interprets plans, blueprints, safety orders, and government rules and regulations as related to planning and engineering activities.
- Assists in the development of cooperative construction standards and specifications.
- Prepares and updates the cooperative’s short range and long-range work plans, power requirement studies, and other required planning documents.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation and maintenance of the cooperative’s electrical mapping system and engineering analysis model.
- Assists in the preparation of construction contracts and documents and the administration thereof.
- Assists with technical support and lends guidance to district (staking) engineers in the design and layout of system improvement projects as needed – particularly in regard to large loads.
- Conducts engineering inspection of on-going and completed construction projects and assists in overall project supervision.
- Provides assistance needed to ensure that adequate service, including continuity of service, is provided to non-interruptible critical loads.
- Maintains engineering records and files.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of environmental reviews, technical reports, equipment specifications, and bid specifications.
- Designs switching procedures and system protection schemes.
- Assists in the operation of the cooperative’s load management system.
- Assists in the preparation of the system improvement budget.
- Makes cooperative board of director presentations as required.
- Performs other tasks as may be assigned.

- Vendors – For information on equipment.
- IEEE – Business associations.

- POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university. Experience
relating to planning and operations with emphasis on design, construction, and operation of electrical
distribution systems is preferred. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Possession of a valid
North Dakota motor vehicles class "C" driver's License.

- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is both in controlled office environment and outside in extreme temperatures (0 to 100 degrees F), in ice, snow,
rain, sun, high humidity, etc. Must be able to walk a mile over uneven terrain, jump ditches, and any other
requirement associated with power line construction and right-of-way clearing to observe work. Must be able to lift
and carry up to 50 pounds.
