"I can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciated the $1000 Operation Round Up grant," says Lynda Dunn, director of the South Central Library.  The grant was used to purchase approximately 70 new children's books for Grades K through 12.

Dunn explains that while the South Central Library is co-located with the Edgeley Public Library, it serves children and adults throughout LaMoure and Logan counties, including all small towns and area schools, through its bookmobile traveling library program. This program is important because there are no other public libraries in either county, she says.

Dunn, who has served as director for both libraries for the past 16 years, says the bookmobile provides a valuable service, especially to adults in small rural communities like Fredonia, Adrian or Nortonville. She explains, "Many older people find it difficult to travel and the bookmobile brings a well-stocked library practically to their doorstep."

In an effort to provide even greater access, she says the South Central Library has also eliminated all membership and book checkout fees.  "This was an important step because so many older people are on fixed incomes," she says. "And, we didn't want to refuse any child the right to read a book, just because they forgot to bring money."

Over the years, the bookmobile traveling library has been a very popular, Dunn says.  And it continues to provide a valuable service.  For instance, in 2006 they tabulated more than 30,000 book checkouts by children and adults using the library.

While both libraries receive some local and state funding through mill levies and other sources, Dunn says, "We're always on a tight budget - so we were especially happy to receive the Operations Round Up grant.   We appreciate your generous support of this worthwhile program."
